Dr. Joe Machnik's Book

About

"From the Sandlots to the World Cup-INSIDE Seven Decades of American Soccer"

"Dr.Joe" Machnik came to the then New Haven College to coach soccer and ice hockey in 1969.

Machnik joined the GNHSOA in 1969 and refereed many games with Don Wynschenk in the dual referee system when the fee was $19.

He also worked in the Connecticut State League as a Referee after finishing his playing career with New Haven City.

His 1970 New Haven Men's soccer team won the local NAIA tournament and qualified for the nationals losing an opening game to Davis and Elkins in eight overtimes.

Machnik brought the 1976 New Haven team to the Div.2 NCAA Finals, losing the title game to Loyola of Baltimore in Seattle.

He is thought to be the only person to have played in the NCAA Tournament (LIU 1963), Coached in 2 NCAA Final Games (LIU '66 and UNH '76) and refereed a NCAA Div.1 Final (1988)

After leaving New Haven to become Referee-in-Chief of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), Machnik returned to UNH to start the women's soccer program in 1991.

In the interim he was Assistant Coach to the USA in the World Cup (Italia 90) and later had a fifteen-year career with Major League Soccer (MLS).

For the past eleven years Machnik has been working as America's first soccer Rules Analyst for Fox Sports TV during World Cups and other international competitions.

"From the Sandlots..." details his 30+ years in Connecticut and is a must read for any Connecticut based soccer enthusiast!

It is available in paperback and a full color hardcover edition on Amazon.com!
